The interplay between the continuously improving mobility of low dimensional electron systems and the ongoing discovery of new physics involving the Quantum Hall Effect

Princeton University, Princeton, USA

The ever-open possibility for discovery of more new quantum Hall physics during the past three decades has been a wonderful driving force for the sustained world-wide effort to continuously improve the quality of the high mobility electron samples that display these 2D effects.  We will review some landmarks in this history, and suggest that this interplay may be continuing to the present day with indications of the existence of a new kind of Fractional Quantum Hall Effect involving quasiparticles that obey Non-abelian statistics.
